Are Manchester City State Owned?

Who really owns Manchester City?

It is very difficult to find out to be honest. According to Wikipedia and other reports, City are owned by the City Football Group, which has a portfolio of clubs world wide. 81% of this group is owned by ADUG, which in turn is wholly owned by Sheik Mansour.

The rest is owned by two other companies Chinese Investment Firm CMC for US$400m and US investment firm Silver Lake Capital who bought their stake a few years later for US$500m. It is not clear what the actual split is now.

So why do people say City are state owned? and which state the USA, China or the UAE?

On one hand, Sheik Mansour is part of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family and has a role in the government, (although he didn’t when he bought the club).

However the actual source of this is our old friends Der Spiegel, publishing more of Rui Pinto’s Football Leaks nonsense. This is the evidence journalists like Mark Saggers and Simon Jordan on Talk Sport, and many more are referring to when they say Manchester City are state owned.

Funny, I don’t remember any one citing state ownership as a problem when Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra bought City, or Berlesconi bought AC Milan? Both men invested a lot of money…..
